Tiger Grapplers Finish Just Shy of Third

The Commerce High School wrestling Tigers placed four wrestlers and finished seven points out of third place in the Panther Invitational last weekend.

Wrestling powerhouse Jefferson took first place with 278.5 points after six first-place matches, one second-place, three third-place and one fourth place finish.

Gilmer County finished with 197.5 points to take second, followed by a tie for third between Jackson County and White County at 143 points. Commerce finished with 136 points.

“I could not be any prouder of our guys’ performance at the Panther Invitational,” said coach Kendall Love.

According to Love, Commerce had a rough opening on the season Dec. 1, when the Tigers hosted Franklin and Chestatee.

“I felt like we stunk it up pretty good on our match at home,” Love said. “I challenged the guys on Wednesday and they stepped it up.”

While Commerce just missed out finishing in the top three at the tournament, Love is confident that this season has promise for Commerce.

“We still had two state placers and another state qualifier out of the tournament. Also, our younger guys had some tough draws that they will definitely take something away from,” said Love.

Commerce had two first-place finishers and two second-place finishers at the tournament. Nick Arostegui won the 152 lbs. class and was also voted as the most outstanding wrestler for the heavier weights by the coaches. At 171 lbs., Terrence Martin secured Commerce’s other first-place finish.
