After getting their pre-season off to a good start with a scrimmage victory over Banks County, the Jackson County Panthers find themselves looking for their first win of the year this week after dropping two close games in the Warrior Classic tournament at White County.
The next chance the Panthers will have will come on Friday, as they travel to East Jackson to face their in-county rivals, the Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

The first game of last week’s tournament was a close one. Both teams fought through four quarters to hold the other at bay and to build a lead. With just six seconds left, the Panthers appeared to have a 49-48 when Lumpkin County drove in and put up a shot from 17 feet out. It went in just as time ran out, giving Lumpkin County a 50-49 victory.
Joseph Smith led the Panthers in scoring with 23 points, while Jarvis Shaw scored 18.
“We did not rebound well at all,” said coach Britt Beaver. “(We) had trouble getting our big men involved. We did a better job of taking care of the basketball. Jarvis shot the ball very well and had a career high 18.”
Up next was a Tuesday game that pitted Jackson County against host White County. White County jumped out to a slim early lead, 12-11, by the end of the first quarter. They would add 13 points to that lead
in the second quarter while holding Jackson County to six points to take a 25-17 lead into the half.
The Warriors remained in control in the third quarter, moving out to a 38-27 advantage. Jackson County would close to within five points with four minutes left on the clock, but couldn’t close the gap. The Warriors extended their lead by five more points by the time the buzzer sounded as White County won 55-45.
