The perfect Storm was working against the Winder-Barrow High School football team last Friday.
Storm Johnson had another big night as Loganville High School rolled to a 57-18 win against the Bulldoggs in what was the season finale for the WBHS team. Johnson, a Miami (Fla.) commit compiled 224 yards on just 10 carries before his coaches called it a night for him.
Johnson had touchdown runs from 68, 5 and 34 yards and even passed for a 34-yard scoring strike out of the Wildcat formation.
“They’ve got several weapons and they were all firing,” said Bulldogg coach Ben Corley. “It’s the nature of this league. If you don’t play well you will get embarrassed.”
Loganville, who won the Region 8-AAAA title a season ago, needed a victory to qualify for the postseason. The Red Devils appeared to be clicking on all cylinders as they claimed the fourth playoff spot from 8-AAAA with the convincing win.
For WBHS, quarterback Christian Davila also went down firing as the junior quarterback was an impressive 23-of-26 for 232 yards and three scores. Trent Demeritte had a career best 12 catches for 158 yards and all three scores.
Kendrick Davis provided some life on the ground for the Bulldoggs as he compiled 81 yards on 14 rushes.
While WBHS finishes the 2009 season at 2-8, the offense was improved in virtually all statistical categories. Davila, who returns next fall, finished the year with more than 2,000 yards through the air.
Demeritte finished his senior season with approximately 1,100 yard. Demeritte just began playing football this season.
One of the priorities during the offseason will be to shore up the defense. With all but three starters returning, Corley believes that goal is certainly obtainable.
The second-year WBHS coach also thanked his players for the hard work they put into this season and throughout their careers.
“I am proud of the kids’ effort and commitment,” Corley said. “They’ve shown great heart and have never backed down once. They never quit. That atttitude is something we can build on for next season.”
Offseason weight training will begin almost immediately for all returning varsity football players in preparation for 2010.
