Jefferson holds off Eagles to take region title

They had to hold off a late surge from the East Jackson Eagles, but the Jefferson Dragons came away from the second Backyard Brawl with an undefeated record and their second region championship in 8-AA in as many years.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Dragons enjoyed a 28-7 lead.

But a touchdown by the Eagles, followed by an onside kick that resulted in a later touchdown moved East Jackson to within 7 points of Jefferson.

With just over two and a half minutes left, the Dragons again broke into the end zone to pad their lead. They would hold off another late charge by the Eagles to pick up the 35-21 victory and the 2009 8-AA region title.

Jefferson will be at home for the first round of playoff action Friday night.
