Despite cold, rainy weather, the Jefferson juggernaut rolled on Friday night, as the Dragons remained undefeated with a 36-6 victory over the Rabun County Wildcats.
The win means only Jefferson and county neighbor East Jackson remain undefeated in region 8-AA with two weeks left in the regular season.
Next the Dragons face what could be a hurdle, as they face the only other team that, prior to Friday night, was undefeated in the region, the Titans of North Oconee.
North Oconee is coming off of their first loss of the season to East Jackson. They are 6-1 in the region and 7-1 overall.
The pairing promises to be a good one. Jefferson has scored 343 points so far this season, an average of 42.9 per game, while the Titans have scored less, a total of 256, an average of 32 per game.
But North Oconee has allowed fewer points to be scored against them this season, a total of 80, an average of 10 per game. The Dragons have allowed 103 points to be scored so far this season, an average of 12.9 per game.
Jefferson has history on its side. In their last three pairings, Jefferson has come away the victor. But last year’s game was a squeaker, as the Dragons won 17-16 on Halloween.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Wildcats
The Dragons hit the field Friday night in Rabun County looking to keep their unbeaten streak alive, while the Wildcats were looking for an upset.
Jefferson took control early, putting seven points on the board in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
The Dragons would continue to control the game in the second half, denying Rabun County access to the end zone while they scored twice. The only hiccup came in a missed extra point, giving Jefferson a 20-0 lead going into the half.
It was the same song, different verse in the third quarter, as Jefferson’s defense held the Wildcats at bay. Meanwhile, the Dragon offense made the most of the situation and added another 16 points to their lead before the end of the third quarter.
The Wildcats would finally get on the board in the fourth quarter by getting their lone touchdown of the night. Jefferson denied Rabun County on the extra point, however, holding the Wildcats to only six points.
While they didn’t score in the fourth, Jefferson’s defense held the line and didn’t allow Rabun County to get any close. At the final buzzer, it was Jefferson coming away with a 36-6 victory.
