If last Friday’s game between Winder-Barrow and Monroe had been played a season ago, there is a good chance the win would have slipped through the grasp of the Bulldoggs.
However, this year’s team is growing up, making positive strides and moving in the right direction in terms of building the type of program head coach Ben Corley, his assistant coaches and players all want. Have there been some missteps along the way? Sure. However, that’s going to happen when you are building and growing.
The offensive display put on by the Bulldoggs last Friday at W. Clair Harris Stadium will be remembered for some time. Mind-boggling numbers, record-breaking performances and a resolve by a team which simply refused to lose.
Even when things could have easily gone in the opponent’s favor, WBHS dug deep and made a stand. When it was all over, I think everyone in attendance had to catch their breath. It was simply that kind of night.
One of the enjoyable things about watching the Bulldoggs this fall has been the progress of quarterback Christian Davila. Just a junior, the WBHS signal caller has steadily gotten better with each game. He set a school record for passing yards in a game against Habersham Central only to break it again against Monroe Area.
Davila was a quarterback who was completely in control last week. His passes looked effortless as he connected with several receivers. Each time he dropped back to pass you had the feeling it was going to be a completion. That’s the kind of groove Davila was in.
And how about the effort of the players in the trenches for Corley’s squad? The Bulldogg offensive coaches rotated players in on a consistent basis and each player more than held their own against a quick Monroe Area defense.
On more than one occassion, the WBHS team was faced with adversity against its rival from Walton County. One came on a questionable at best call which resulted in a touchdown for the Canes. It appeared the Bulldoggs had intercepted a pass in the endzone but the call instead was ruled a touchdown.
The team responded, however, with a 96-yard drive for a touchdown to turn the momentum back in its favor.
Later in the second half, Monroe Area would eventually tie the game at 41. Showing no signs of being rattled, Winder-Barrow answered on just two plays and scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown on another touchdown strike from Davila.
Yes, this Bulldogg program is making improvements. Evidence of that was seen last Friday night.
This Friday will be another big test for WBHS. It will be another test on the road to getting the program where the coaches and players want it to be and know it can be.
