The Banks County 2009 Lady Leopards took second place in region 8-AA over the weekend. The team is now battling in the state playoffs.

Lady Leopards defeat Crawford to advance to Sweet 16

Banks County’s Lady Leopards have hit the postseason full throttle as the girls now advance into the Sweet 16.

Standing between Banks County and entry into the Elite Eight is 7A-AA Rockmart. The Rockmart Yellow Jackets went 10-1 during region play and defeated Lovett 4-2,8-0 in the first round doubleheader of the state tournament. Banks County begins the second round of the state playoffs on Friday.

Friday’s game is on the road at Rockmart.

“We will have to play better and do all the small things to be successful against Rockmart,” said coach Dean Goodwin.

On paper, the two teams are just about evenly matched as the Lady Leopards have allowed 47 runs compared to Rockmart’s 48 allowed runs.

Rockmart has scored more runs at 172, while Banks County has brought in 162. The Lady Leopards enter into Friday’s game with a 24-10 win-loss to meet Rockmart’s 25-7 record.

The winner advances into Position C of the Elite Eight and will face the Position A team of either Pierce Count or Berrien on Oct. 22 at noon in Columbus.
