Leading up to the Battle of Barrow contest between Apalachee and Winder-Barrow, there had been some talk of how well the improved Bulldogg offense would fare against the Wildcat defense.
It seems AHS took the pre-game talk personally and when all was said and done, delivered perhaps their best performance of the season with a 56-0 thumping of its cross county and region rival. The win improved the No. 9-ranked Wildcats to 5-0 while WBHS dropped to 1-4.
“I thought our offensive line controlled the game and our backs ran extremely hard,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “Coming in, there had been a lot of talk about our defense and their offense. Our kids took it personal.”
One of the few drawbacks Davis could find was the number of penatlies his team was called for Friday night. In addition, he was not pleased with his team’s kickoff coverage saying WBHS gained “way too many yards.”
Penalty-wise, the Wildcats were called for 13 infractions for 100 yards. WBHS was flagged seven times for 75 yards in the contest.
The game was a complete domination for AHS, who racked up 575 yards on the ground. The Bulldoggs had no answer for the Wildcat offense as Apalachee’s stable of running backs ran at will. Jon Lee had a 274 yard night, playing in front of scouts from the Air Force Academy.
“For us it was just another win,” Lee said. “This was another region game that we wanted to win.”
John Ansley added 96 yards on just three attempts while backup Alex Camp grinded out 136 yards on 11 attempts.
The Wildcat defense kept Winder-Barrow in check from the start forcing the Bulldoggs to punt on every possession in the first half including going three-and-out on their first four offensive series. On the first four series of the first half, Winder-Barrow was limited to -1 yards.
WBHS quarterback Christian Davila was limited to a 3-of-16 night for just 33 yards, this a week after he set a school record for passing yardage against Habersham Central. Kendrick Davis rushed for 63 yards for one of the few bright spots for the Bulldogg offense.
The loss was tough for WBHS coach Ben Corley to take.
“It was just one of those nights,” the second-year Bulldogg head coach said, not caring to elaborate any further.
Apalachee quarterback Mike Norman didn’t have to pass much but was 4-of-4 for 79 yards.
One player for the Wildcats who has quietly had a impact in 2009 has been first-year kicker Guy Hunt, who was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra point attempts Friday.
“This is a great feeling,” Hunt said of the win against his team’s county rival. “There was actually some talk in class from some people that Winder might beat us.”
As far as his on the field performance, the AHS kicker said he believes he continues to improve.
“I try to get better each week,” he said. “That is my goal as I try to help the team every way I can.”
The game was over by halftime as Apalachee had pounded out a 35-0 lead. On the first play of the second half, Lee raced untouched for 80 yards to slam the door — hard — in the face of his team’s county rival. That touchdown run would be the only time Lee would carry the football in the second half as Davis began freely using his backups in the contest.
