The Jefferson Lady Dragons closed out their regular season last week, and now moves into the post-season with area tournament play.
Jefferson finished the regular season 21-8 overall, 8-0 in region play and finished in first place in Area 8 A/AA North.
They will face North Oconee on Thursday in the area tournament against the winner of the south play-in match on Tuesday night.
The area tournament is double elimination with the top four teams advancing to the state play offs.
Jefferson started out last week by traveling to Monroe Area High School for two matches.
The first match was against Monroe Area, who defeated the Lady Dragons 2-0 with both sets scores at 26-24.
Stephanie Fincher led Jefferson with six kills, followed by Cassie Metcalf with five and Eden Starnes with three. Both Carolyn Carreno and Amanda Daniel had six assists each.
“A few points either way could have turned the outcome the other way,” said coach Michael Paul. “ We played (against) good competition and came up a little short.”
In the second match Jefferson lost to Cedar Shoals 2-0 with set scores of 25-21 and 26-24.
“Again the scores were very close but we just could not take the advantage and keep it,” Paul said.
Stephanie Fincher had 10 kills against Cedar Shoals. Cassie Metcalf had four, Taylor Cramsey had three and Eden Starnes had three. Amanda Daniel had eight assists while Carolyn Carreno had six.
Jefferson closed out their regular season Thursday night by splitting a tri-match with Prince Avenue and Tallulah Falls.
In the first match, Jefferson lost to Prince 2-0, with set scores of 25-23 and 25-15.
Stephanie Fincher recorded seven kills. Amanda Daniel had seven assists to go along with five assists from Carolyn Carreno. Eden Starnes had four kills.
“We had too many errors against a good team,” Paul said.
Following senior night festivities, the Lady Dragons played region opponent Tallulah Falls, winning 2-0 with set scores of 25-16 and 25-22.
The win gave the Lady Dragons a perfect record against sub-area opponents this season.
“We used the match to showcase our seniors and they all rose to the challenge,” Paul said. “I was especially proud of them all.”
