Despite it being their lowest scoring game of the year, the Jefferson Dragons continued their winning ways Friday night by defeating the Eagles of Riverside Military Academy 27-0.
That leaves the Dragons 5-0 in 8-AA, and 6-0 overall.
The Dragons have the week off this week before traveling to Homer to face the Leopards of Banks County, who are coming off of a loss to East Jackson Friday night.
Jefferson has won the last two meetings between the two teams. Last year, the Dragons won 34-22.
The two teams will face off in Jefferson on Oct. 16.
Riverside
Jefferson started out Friday night with a strong first quarter run against the Eagles of Riverside Military Academy.
With just under five and a half minutes left on the clock, Lucas Redd broke his way into the Riverside end zone from one yard out to put the first Dragon points on the board for the night. Asher Orr’s successful PAT made it 7-0.
A Riverside fumble gave the Dragons possession in Eagle territory a few minutes later, and the Dragons began to drive hard. Moments later, it appeared that Redd had scored the Dragons’ second touchdown of the night, but it was called back on a penalty.
Then with just under a minute and a half left in the quarter, quarterback Darius Minor connected with Hoytez Damons on a 15-yard touchdown pass to give Jefferson a 14-0 lead.
The Eagles turned up the heat on Jefferson in the second quarter, holding the Dragons at bay defensively while their offense twice moved into Jefferson territory. Riverside was unable to capitalize either time, getting no closer than the Jefferson 20-yard line on fourth downs. Jefferson would carry the lead into the half.
Jefferson would come out looking to add to their lead in the third quarter. A little over a minute in, Redd again made his way into the Riverside end zone from one yard out, and it was a 21-0 game.
Both teams fought hard for field position while trying to get points on the board. Twice Riverside’s defense denied access to their end zone to the Dragons, but with just under two minutes left in the game,
Minor slid through from six yards out to score Jefferson’s final points of the game. A blocked kick made it 27-0, which would end up as the final score.
