Tigers Start Region Play Fri. Night

After a 20-12 beating by Lincoln County last Friday, the Commerce Tigers will open region play this Friday when the Athens Academy Spartans visit Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.

Coach Steve Savage’s Tigers could not protect a third-quarter lead last week as the Red Devils put the game away with a fourth-quarter touchdown.
“I thought we fought them pretty hard,“ said Savage.

Athens Academy will offer a challenge of its own, according to Savage, who noted that the Spartans have a talented quarterback who can put the ball on target down field.


“Athens Academy has a big, fine football team just like they always do,” Savage said. “Their quarterback does a good job leading their offense and directing the ball around. Defensively, they get to where the ball is … It should be a heck of a game.”

For Commerce to win its first region game, Savage says the Tigers must play solid, fundamental football on both sides of the ball
“You just have to be really sound when you play them,” said Savage.

Athens Academy is 2-1 overall this season and has beaten the Tigers three straight times. They won the 2008 game by a touchdown.
