There can be no denying that last Friday’s win against Clarke Central was big for the Apalachee High School football team.
However, Wildcat head coach Shane Davis knows that game is only as big as the one coming up on the AHS schedule. Such is the case when you play a 10-game region slate.
For now, all thoughts are on Rockdale County as the Apalachee Wildcats prepare to make the trek to Conyers this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
“We’ll have to see how we handle it,” Davis said.
“As coaches and players, we have to handle it the right way. I hope our mindset won’t be any different than it was this past Friday. This one will be just as big. They get bigger and bigger each week. We enjoyed the moment after last Friday but we have to go to work and get ready for another one that is just as important.”
The Bulldoggs, coached by Mike Etheridge, also run a Wing-T offense.
Defensively, Rockdale uses a 3-5 look, Davis said.
“They are athletic,” the AHS coach said. “They have two losses but both were close. They beat a good Madison County team. They have proven they can score points. They are a good football team and one that is better than their record shows.”
Defensively, Davis said Rockdale runs the football and the Wildcat coach said he expects a “good, tough game.”
“This is no time to sit back and relax,” he said. “We have to go back to work. The highs never last as long as the lows.”
To this point, anyway, the AHS team has not experienced the low of a loss in 2009.
NOTES: Senior Donte Williams was injured during last Friday’s game with Clarke Central and was taken from the stadium by ambulance.
Williams returned to the stadium later that night, however, and appears fine although his playing status for this Friday remained unclear earlier in the week.
