Corey Brakhage led all Madison County High School runners Tuesday with a third-place finish (19:30) and Dalton Owensby added a fourth-place showing (19:54) as the boys team finished second in a three-team home meet.
Madison County (42 points) edged Stephens County (49 points), but finished 10 points off the pace of meet winner Hart County (32 points).
On the girls’ side, Elise Coberly led Madison County with a 29:16, good for eighth overall, as the Lady Raiders (45 points) finished second behind Stephens County (15 points).
“I’m pleased with the performances on Tuesday,” second-year MCHS coach Tim Cornett said. “Elise had an excellent race for us, earning her the top spot for our team. Corey mixed it up at the front of the race, eventually finishing third overall.”
Madison County runs Saturday in the UGA Invitational, which is both a college and high school event hosted jointly by the University of Georgia and Oconee County High School.
“I’m excited about the improvement of our team, especially on the difficult course we have,” Cornett said. “The progression shows increased fitness, and we can’t wait to get on a fast course Saturday to see what we can do.
Others scoring in Tuesday’s meet on the boys’ side were Dalton Owensby (fourth, 19:52), Codey Brakhage (eighth, 20:31), Scott Barnes (ninth, 20:37) and Chaves Smith (20th, 22:20).
Other girls running Tuesday were Mendi Cromer (ninth, 29:42), Jenna Jansen (11th, 29:59) and Alexia Supakorndej (31:29) and Haley Costello (15th, 32:26).
Madison County competed a week earlier (Sept. 8) at Banks County with the boys finishing fourth out of seven teams and the girls placing fifth out of seven teams.
Owensby led the boys with a 21:55, while Jansen set the pace for the girls’ squad with a 32:07.
