Commerce’s Dizzy Dean Bid Ended By Dragons

Commerce Parks and Recreation director Lonnie Dickerson said the Commerce teams had a terrific post-season run.

“When we got into Dizzy Dean this year, we knew that was a tougher brand of ball,” Dickerson said. “We felt like we would probably take our licks, and have trouble being successful in the tournament.”

But that wasn’t the case, as the teams did well during the season, and had a good tournament run.

Dickerson credits 10-Under team coach Barry Brooks and 12-Under coach Keith Lord for the team’s strong showings.

“We had some superb coaching this year,” he said. “We had coaches who are highly skilled, and who are very knowledgeable, who were willing to work. A lot of learning occurred during pre-season practices, and we did very well to qualify for state with both of our boys’ teams.”

Dickerson said that the performance of both teams has left everyone feeling good about the effort this year.

“We are real pleased, and I think the coaches, players and parents alike were very pleased that we were so successful.”

Dickerson said a summer baseball program like the one in place in Commerce is very important for players who are just a few years out of moving into high school programs.

“When you have good coaches, and they are teaching the kids the proper fundamentals, they are preparing them for another level of play,” he said. “I think we’ll have a shot at some of our players playing ball beyond the high school level here in the years to come. I think that it will happen.”
