It was just the kind of night the East Jackson faithful were hoping for.
After the rains cleared out, the East Jackson Eagles took to a wet, muddy field to beat the West Jackson Spartans 55-26 in the opening games for both teams.
The Eagles will travel to Fannin County Friday to face the Rebels, who are coming off of a 24-18 victory over Gilmer County. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Last year, Fannin County won handily against the Eagles, 20-6. But Friday’s results may give East Jackson some momentum going into this Friday’s match-up.
Last Friday went well early for the Eagles, as senior Deon Sewell broke into the end zone just a little over a minute into the game. The extra point attempt failed, giving East Jackson a 6-0 lead.
But West Hall wasn’t going to go away quietly, and just a little over three minutes later, the Spartans put their first points on the board with a touchdown. After their extra point attempt was blocked, the score was tied 6-6.
East Jackson began driving, and just when it appeared the drive might stall, the Eagles got a big first down on West Hall’s 34-yard line to keep the drive alive, and with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter, East Jackson broke into the end zone for its second touchdown of the night. The Eagles made the two-point conversion, taking a 14-6 lead.
The Eagles’ only major hiccup on the night came with three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter, when the Eagles fumbled a punt from West Hall and allowed the Spartans to recover.
Thirteen seconds later, West Hall had its second touchdown on the night, made the two-point conversion, and the game was knotted at 14.
East Jackson moved ahead with just under eight minutes remaining in the half, as Sewell scored again. With the extra point, the Eagles moved out to a 21-14 lead.
With just under two minutes left in the half, the Spartans scored again, but East Jackson again blocked the extra point to maintain a 21-20 advantage.
