The Apalachee High School volleyball team defeated Alcovy High School last Thursday and pushed Rockdale County to the limit before falling in three sets.
The Lady Wildcats, who were 3-1 entering this week, suffered a setback prior to the Alcovy match when Ryan Burke hurt her arm in warmups causing coach Michael Parks to make a lineup change at the beginning of play.
Brittany Wehbunt started her first match and played outside hitter. The team took a 25-18, 25-20 victory.
“Brittany played well,” the coach said. “I moved Michelle Miller to middle hitter and she played outstanding. Michelle could play any spot on the floor if I asked her. She and Megan Pippin combined for seven kills and four aces.”
In addition, Sara Cole had nine assists, three kills and three digs. Samantha Hatcher had three service aces while Katelyn Macdowell had 11 assists.
“We played really well against Alcovy,” Parks said.
In the second match against Rockdale County, AHS took the first set 25-22 before falling 25-21, 25-11.
“We were easily outsized and they had a great advantage on the front line in height,” Parks said. “We used back row attacks and won the first set. We played very good volleyball while Sara and Katelyn spread the ball around to create scores. I think their size eventually became a factor and they were able to score easily. We worked hard for our points, but that is the kind of team we are.”
Cole finished with 15 assists while Macdowell had 14 assists with eight digs. Whitney Clarke had 10 digs while Miller finished with nine digs and three kills in the contest.
Burke finished with three kills and three service aces.
