The final score does not indicate how much of a battle the Apalachee High School football team had Friday night in the 2009 season opener.
Before pulling away for a 31-7 win, the Wildcats had to scrap, especially in the first half, against an improved Monroe Area High School team, coached by Matt Fligg. The Purple Hurricanes, who were 0-10 last season, led 7-3 in the second quarter running their newly installed triple option offense. AHS (1-0, 1-0) would rebound to lead 10-7 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter with 21 points.
"Monroe has a good team," said Wildcat coach Shane Davis. "We scored right before the half and that helped us seize the momentum I believe."
