It’s been a bumpy start for the East Jackson Lady Eagles volleyball team, as it enters the week with a 1-6 record.
The Lady Eagles will take to the court on Thursday at Clarke Central against the Gladiators and Salem, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Lady Eagles started off their season on Aug. 15 by hosting a play date for several area teams.
The date didn’t go well for the host, however, as East Jackson recorded only one win, coming against Walnut Grove 2-0, with set scores of 25-18 and 25-7.
The Lady Eagles lost to Athens Academy, North Oconee and Prince Avenue by scores of 0-2. They lost to Athens Christian 1-2, with scores of 21-25, 25-23 and 21-25.
“We had a pretty good weekend,” said coach Tim Thomas. “Not quite what we'd hoped for but still good. Of our 11 varsity girls we started out with nine Saturday morning and by the end of the day we were down to seven. By the time we got to that fifth match of the day with Prince Avenue, those seven were completely worn out. But they actually saved their best for that match, and looked really good.”
Despite coming up short in the match, Thomas was pleased with his team’s performance.
“There was one point in that game where the ball crossed the net 21 times in one rally,” he said. “The entire crowd was yelling and cheering both sides during the last few shots. It was really something to see.”
