LeAnn Mitchell has coached her share of softball games in her career but the Winder-Barrow High School mentor may have not had as many questions going into a season as she does this one.
The Lady Bulldoggs enter 2009 with several new players, the loss of some key team members, an injury to a key performer and the prospect of relying on a freshman pitcher.
Mitchell, however, takes it all in stride with her laid back approach to the game.
“We’ll see how things go,” the coach said. “We lost some players, had one key player transfer and our starter catcher had knee surgery. We have five seniors this year who will have to lead us.”
Brittany Clack, Lauren Johnson, Shelby Reed, Nicole Turner and Erin Vrooman will be the five seniors for the Lady Bulldoggs this fall. Juniors on the team include Shea Davis, Kaleigh Hagley, Regina Hall and Emily Lott.
Karri Kiley and Tamara Orr are the team’s two sophomores while freshmen Marrissa Merrill, Kiley Smith and Ashley Waits will also see time on the varsity.
“When freshmen make up a third of the team you have on the field that really shows how young you are,” Mitchell.
Mitchell also has a reshaped coaching staff as Monty McClure, Josh Carter and Martha Butler will assist with the program.
WBHS dropped a scrimmage to Walnut Grove last week and will compete in a tournament hosted by Madison County Wednesday through Saturday. The home opener is set for Tuesday against region foe Apalachee beginning with junior varsity play at 4:30 p.m. followed by varsity action at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Doggs will then travel to Prince Avenue Aug. 26.
