Looking to follow up on a strong 2008 that saw them go 18-17 overall and 6-4 in the region, the Jefferson Lady Dragons got their season underway over the weekend in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic.
Next up for the Lady Dragons is a Monday trip to Norcross to face the Lady Wolves of Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
The Lady Dragons opened with an official scrimmage against Morgan County on August 11, winning 6-5 despite several defensive mistakes.
“The mistakes don’t worry me at all though with this young team,” said coach Brad Puckett. “They are all fixable and will get better with experience and games played.”
Kasey McDonald delivered a big two out hit to drive in Brittany Smith to first that gave Jefferson the win.
Next was a trip to Peachtree Ridge for the first game of the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic on Friday. Game one didn’t go well for the Lady Dragons, as they fell to Peachtree Ridge 14-3 in four innings.
Game two went better, as Jefferson recorded a dominating win over Gilmer County, 8-0 in four innings.
The Lady Dragons remained on a roll Saturday morning, as they defeated Central Gwinnett 4-2. Jefferson hit a bump in the road with a loss to Heritage, 9-4, and then ended their tournament with a loss to
Providence Christian 2-1.
Puckett said he is excited about the possibilities of this year’s team.
“After losing five great seniors from last year, we knew we would have to have some kids really step up to fill crucial roles,” he said.
