The Statham Dixie Boys baseball program is set for the big stage.
The local team will compete in the World Series beginning Saurday in Ozark, Ala. Statham will face an opponent from North Carolina in the opening round. After competing across North Georgia in recent weeks, the Statham team captured the state championship with a two-game series against Collins Hill.
Statham took game one 11-0 before clinching state with a 22-10 victory.
In the first contest against Collins Hill, Clint Spratlin earned the win on the pitcher’s mound working six innings. He was also 2-for-4 at the plate.
Ryan Bryan and Cole Shook also helped lead the team as Brown had a two-run blast and Shook was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Preston Maxey also added a 2-for-4 performance.
In the second and deciding game, Brown continued to have a hot bat as he homered once again. Teammate Chris Guthrie had a grand slam and had driven in six runs before the contest was over.
Spratlin added a homer while Cory Hoopaugh registered a double.
Led by coach Kenny Shook, the Statham-based team has competed against United States Speciality Sports Association travel league squads. Most of the team members are part of the baseball programs at Winder-Barrow and Apalachee High Schools.
The team is still looking to raise funds for the trip as travel expenses and uniforms have to be paid for.

The Statham City Council recoginzed the team last week during its work session and discussed placing a banner within the city recognizing the team’s accomplishments.
