World Series opening set for Thursday

After months of preparation, the big moment for the Jackson County Parks and Rec department is upon us.

Opening ceremonies for the Dizzy Dean 11-Year-Old Baseball World Series are slated to get underway at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Stadium at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

As of Monday morning, 34 teams were slated to take part from six states. Three area teams, the Jackson County Force, the Jackson County Bullets and the Jefferson Dragons will be taking part.

The tournament is for Dizzy Dean 11-year-old league teams.

Play gets underway Friday morning at 10 a.m. at East Jackson Park, and will continue to Wednesday, when the championship game will be played.

Games will also be held at Lamar Murphy Park in Jefferson.

Thursday’s opening ceremonies will include a parade of teams and a keynote address from University of Georgia head baseball coach David Perno.

The ceremonies will include food vendors, children’s activities, a concert and a fireworks show beginning around 9:15 p.m.

The opening ceremonies are free for the public to attend.
