Football players and coaches at Winder-Barrow and Apalachee High School have been working for the start of the 2009 season for months now.
As the countdown to the new season moves into the summer months, players, coaches and fans alike know just what lies ahead as far as the 2009 schedule goes.
Both WBHS and AHS will continue competing in Region 8-AAAA this fall. The WBHS Bulldoggs will be looking to improve upon last fall’s 1-9 mark while the AHS Wildcats are hoping for another trip to the postseason.
Coach Ben Corley is entering his second season at WBHS and has had the benefit of a full offseason of work this go around. Corley’s team will host Flowery Branch in a preseason scrimmage Aug. 21 before having an open date during week one of the regular season.
WBHS will play its first regular season contest at home Sept. 4 against Madison County.
Coach Shane Davis and his AHS Wildcats, meanwhile, will take part in a preseason scrimmage Aug. 21 against Westminster. The regular season opens the following week against Monroe Area at home. The Wildcats open week is scheduled for Sept. 11. WBHS and AHS will once again be playing a complete region schedule in 2009.The annual Battle of Barrow will be played Oct. 2 at AHS.
Offseason work, which began shortly after the 2008 season concluded, will continue in coming weeks before teams return to the practice field for the start of fall practice.
