Area athletes take honors at state meet

Several local youths brought home awards from the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) state track meet May 8 in Carrollton.

Jackson County’s Parks and Recreation program, which restarted following a 12-year hiatus, had numerous top ten finishes including two first place victories.

Additionally, Jefferson Park and Recreation had several competitors place in the meet with a handful of top five wins.

Victors from the county program include first place champions Grayson Custer in the 7-8 year-old girls’ 400-meter dash and Destiny Gaudlock in the 9-10 year-old girls’ softball throw to set a new GRPA record distance of 112’10” a full eight inches over the old record.

Custer took the win with a 1:22.15 finish in the 400m as well as third in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the long jump.

Jefferson Park and Rec had quite a few top ten finishers in the GRPA state meet as well as one champion.

The girls’ 13-14 year-old group from Jefferson had one competitor and she earned the top honor in the high jump. Reese Bowles took first in the high jump with a height of 4’5”. Bowles also earned second and third place victories in the 1600-meter and 800-meter runs.
