Diamond Doggs advance to second round

The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team showed it pays to compete in a tough region.

The Diamond Doggs entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed from Region 8-AAAA but eliminated Dalton, the No. 1 seed from Region 7-AAAA, Saturday in a best-of-three series which went all three games.

Coach Brian Smith's team won the deciding game 8-5 and moves on to face Starrs Mill in the second round on the road. That series begins with a doubleheader Wednesday. The third game, if necessary, would be Thursday.
