Despite going 2-2 over a two-day span, the Jackson County Panthers saw their playoff hopes dashed after losing to Eastside Friday night.
Despite their playoff dreams being over, the Panthers still have a chance to end their season on a high note, with two games left in regular season play.
The penultimate game for Jackson County comes this (Wednesday) afternoon, as the Panthers play host to Hart County.
The Bulldogs come to town with a 5-7 region record, and 11-12 overall. In their last pairing back on April 11, the Bulldogs came away with a 13-3 win.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Franklin County
The Panthers started their week out by traveling to Franklin County to face the Lions, a team that they had defeated back in March.
At the beginning, it looked like the Lions would turn the tables on Jackson County, as they moved ahead 5-1 at the end of the first inning. Three innings later, the Panthers had closed the gap only to see it increase again as Franklin County moved out to an 8-4 lead.
Jackson County began working their way back into contention by putting one run across in the fifth and another three in the sixth to tie the score 8-8.
Quinn Grogan had a leadoff single to start the seventh. Codye Elrod and Jim Florentine followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. A sac fly from Kelly Moates gave Grogan a chance to score, and the Panthers took the final lead of the game, as they would go on to win 9-8.
The victory gave Jackson County a season sweep over the Lions, and moved them into a tie for fifth place in the subregion with Eastside and Morgan County.
John Fernandez picked up the win from the mound, giving up no hits in three and one third innings in relief.
Elrod led at the plate with two hits.
Morgan County
Next up was a home stand against Morgan County, with both teams in the midst of a four-team race for the final playoff spot.
But the Panthers ended up as their own worst enemies, as nine walks and two hit batters opened the door for Morgan County.
The Panthers first found themselves five runs behind after a five run top of the second for the Bulldogs on one hit, one error, a hit batter and four walks. Starter John Florentine would give up only two runs in the other four innings he pitched, but the woes the Panthers suffered in the second inning did them in, as Morgan County went on to win 10-2.
Florentine recorded the loss from the mound, while Rob Williams, Trey Sorrells, Codye Elrod and Quinn Grogan all had hits for Jackson County.
The loss left the Panthers two games behind the playoff spot in the region.
Meadowcreek
The Panthers had a chance to catch their breath on Thursday, as they traveled to Meadowcreek for a non-region pairing with the Mustangs in Norcross.
Jackson County jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first three and a half innings that included a nine run top of the fourth. The Panthers would go on to win 14-4.
Ken Miller recorded his first win of the season, giving up only one hit in three innings.
Rob Williams went 3-4 at the plate with a triple and four RBIs. Austin Robinson and Codye Elrod were both 1-2 with two RBIs.
The win gave the Panthers a 7-12 overall record for the season.
