The sign of a good team is defeating opponents it is expected to beat.
The Apalachee High School baseball team did just that Monday with a 10-2 road win against Monroe Area. For Wildcats coach Mike Cavey, it’s just another sign of becoming a contender.
“We played well,” the coach said. “Justin Shultz pitched well and we had a good day offensively. We did a good job of getting timely hits. It was nice to play well all around. Justin’s curve ball was really working and you should win when that happens.”
Shultz was dominant in the complete game performance as he recorded 12 strikeouts as AHS recorded its sixth Region 8-AAAA win of 2009 and seventh victory overall. Cavey and other officials at the school are checking into the record books to see whether Monday’s win ties a school record for number of victories in a season. There was some talk of seven being the school record while others believe that number is 10.
Chandler Murphy and Hunter Coleman led the Diamond Cats at the plate Monday.
While AHS is officially eliminated from postseason contention this spring, Cavey still knows his team can shake things up in the region standings.
“We still have a chance to make some noise at the end,” the coach said. “That’s what we are looking to do in our final games. We want to continue to play well and go out on a positive note.”
The Wildcats will host Madison County today (Wednesday) at 5:55 p.m. before traveling to Habersham Friday for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The 2009 season finale will be Monday vs. Rockdale at home at 5:55 p.m.
