Diamond Doggs battling for postseason

That caused the 17 runs to be taken away as the two Region 8-AAAA foes returned Saturday to begin again. The Bulldoggs still managed a 5-1 win, but the victory did not seem as dominating as it might have been the day before.

“Friday was a lot of fun,” Smith said. “We just couldn’t back back on the field for the final three outs. It was the last thing we wanted but we completely understand with the lightning.”

Dustin Dunagan, a junior, only threw 28 pitches Friday so he was able to return to the mound Saturday and go the distance against the Wildcats.

“He was begging to get to throw again,” Smith said. “He has been key for us all season. He has been very steady each time he takes the mound.”

Christian Davila, Jeremy Donaldson and Josh Ellerbe all homered Saturday for WBHS who improved to 9-4 in region play with the victory.

The Bulldoggs remain in the thick of the playoff chase although Smith said he is not sure how many additional wins it would take at this point to punch a postseason ticket.

“This region comes down to the last game every year,” the coach said. “Some unexpected things always seem to take place. It is a fight every year.”

With a bye this Friday, the Bulldogs will host Heritage Monday before traveling to Salem next Wednesday. Both games are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
