After a strong week that saw wins against Banks County and Commerce, the Jefferson Dragons go into play tied for first in the region.
Jefferson has a 7-1 region record, while North Oconee is 7-2.
The lead could be decided this (Wednesday) afternoon, as the Dragons travel to North Oconee to face the Titans.
First pitch is slated for 5:55 p.m.
Banks County
The Dragons got their week off to a strong start last Tuesday, as they played host to the Leopards of Banks County.
Jefferson came on strong out of the box, taking a three run lead in the bottom of the first. Banks County would get one run across in the top of the second, but was then held scoreless for the rest of the game by Jefferson’s Chris Beck.
The Dragons would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and go on to win 6-1.
Beck gave up only four hits in seven innings, striking out 12 in the process.
Jamie Sexton went 2-3 at the plate, scoring one run and one RBI, including a double and a home run. Lucas Redd went 1-3 with a run and an RBI including a homer. Tyler Bailey went 1-2 with two RBIs. Caleb Meek went 1-3 with an RBI.
Commerce
Next up for Jefferson was a non-region pairing with their in-county rivals, the Commerce Tigers.
The Dragons got on the board first, getting a run across in the bottom of the second to take the lead. While two more runners would get across, one in the fourth and another in the sixth, the Dragons’ pitching staff worked to hold the Tigers to a one hit, scoreless game. In the end, Jefferson came away the victors, 3-0.
Chris Swancey recorded the win, giving up one hit and striking out 10 in three and one-third innings. Jamie Sexton pitched for just over an inning and a half, setting down six Commerce batters. Jake Fields came in for an inning, with Chris Beck recording the save by closing out the game on the mound.
