Commerce High School’s golfers were out on the greens again last week, taking wins over East Jackson’s golfers.
This week the boys and girls teams hosted Hebron Christian on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
Coming up for the Tiger golfers, the boys will play at Jennings Mill on Thursday with Cedar Shoals. On Saturday, the boys will be at Double Oaks competing in the Madison County tournament.
East Jackson
The Lady Tigers won 104 to East Jackson’s 129.
CJ Wilkes was low medalist, shooting a 51. Callie Adams was just behind at 53, Chelsey Cain turned in a 57 and Anna Marie Hooper shot 66.
“This was a good score for our girls,” said coach David Stephenson. “(Wilkes, Cain and Adams) are capable of shooting in the 40s which is my goal for them. Anna Marie is much improved but missed some practice time with an injury.”
Stephenson said the Lady Tigers’ hitting has improved this season, but the golfers still need work at putting.
The boys defeated East Jackson 168-204.
Low medalist for Commerce was Sam Purcell with a 39. Other Tiger scores included Casey Drinkard, 41; Colton Dean, 43; Austin Patterson, 45; and Brandon Coots, 49.
“One sixty-eight is a good score this time of year,” Stephenson said. “Purcell played a really solid round of golf.”
The Tigers players didn’t fare so well Thursday at Lane Creek against Prince Avenue. The Wolverines won with a 170; Commerce carded a 185.
“We did not play well, but that's golf,” said Stephenson. “We were playing a strange course and just had a bad day. I am not discouraged. I know the guys will work hard to improve their games before Region.”
Dean was low scorer for the Tigers with a 35. Drinkard shot a 45, Purcell finished at 47 and Patterson and Coots each shot 50.
“Prince Avenue has a good team. Their number one golfer shot a 34, which is outstanding,” Stephenson said. “Hats off to them. Maybe we can beat them on our home course later in the season.”
Commerce will face Prince Avenue at Double Oaks in April.
