Bulldoggs off to perfect 5-0 region start

“Going into the region schedule we felt it was possible to get off to a good start,” Smith said. “Looking at things, we felt the next half of the first 10 games would be a little tougher.”

Still, Smith knows games have to be won on the field and noted his team has benefited from outstanding pitching with several complete games to this point in the 2009 season.

“We’ve also benefited from good defense,” the coach said. “We haven’t put it all together in every game though. Hopefully, we are about to hit our stride.”

Monday’s off date came at a good time for WBHS, Smith said. It was simply by luck of the draw the Bulldoggs were off March 23.

“It helps us set up our pitching for this tough stretch,” Smith said. “It’s good to be able to rest up.”

With several tough games on the horizon, the coach likes his team’s attitude at this point.

“We are all excited about the challenge coming up,” Smith said. “We have still not played our best baseball yet. We want to start putting it all together. It’s a good feeling to be 5-0 and know that you haven’t played your best yet.”

DIAMOND NOTES: The most recent wins for the Diamond Doggs were against Cedar Shoals (13-2) and Clarke Central (3-1).

WBHS also defeated Apalachee High School last Monday 11-5.
