Wildcats turn back Jaguars

Justin Shultz had Cedar Shoals batters scrambling Friday afternoon.

The Apalachee High School pitcher was in complete control as the Wildcats registered their first Region 8-AAAA win of 2009 with a 6-0 victory against the visiting Jaguars.

Shultz, who has been a key player for coach Mike Cavey’s team this spring, allowed just one hit while walking two. He also sent nine Cedar Shoals batters back to the dugout after striking out.

It was the first time in five seasons AHS had held an opponent scoreless.

Shultz was the man of the hour for the Wildcats as he also had two hits, an RBI and run scored to help pace the offense.

It was also a strong defensive effort for the AHS squad, who improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA, as they did not have any errors.

The Diamond Wildcats will return to action Friday when they face Salem High School in another region contest on the road at 5:30 p.m.
