Before the weather took an odd turn late last week, first with heavy rains and then with seveal inches of snow, the Winder-Barrow High School baseball team managed to get a game in and defeated visiting Eastside 12-0.
Coach Brian Smith’s team, which now stands at 1-1 overall, needed just five innings to send the Eastside Eagles back to Covington.
Clint Spratlin and Brett Marbutt combined to keep the visiting Eagle bats in check at the Maddox Baseball Complex. Spratling worked the first three innings allowing just three hits while striking out two.
Marbutt closed out the contest with two strikeouts.
The loss helped WBHS overcome the disappointment of a 4-1 setback to Dacula in the season opener. Those two teams are scheduled to meet again today (Wednesday) at 6 p.m.
In the win against Eastside last week, the Diamond Doggs had 10 hits in contest. The big inning came in the bottom of the third as Smith’s squad pushed eight runs across.
NOTES: Dustin Dunagan earned the start in the season opener against the Dacula Falcons. Dunagan, a junior, recorded eight strikeouts in the contest.
Trace McDaniel also saw time on the pitcher’s mound in the season opener for WBHS.
Dacula took advantage of some Bulldogg miscues to win the 4-1 contest.
WBHS will load up the bus for a trip South to play Effingham County and Statesboro Saturday. The games are scheduled to begin at noon.
The Diamond Doggs return home next Wednesday to begin region play against Habersham Central at 5:55 p.m.
This is the be the first contest which WBHS hopes will eventually lead to state.
