BCHS grapplers place three at state, tie for 12th

Banks County’s Mat Leopards ended a strong season at the state tournament on Saturday, in a tie for 12th place with East Jackson.

Banks had a third place finish from Tramane Mayfield at 285 pounds, a fourth place finish from Matthew Patton at 215 pounds and fifth-place finisher Demetric Dempson at 171 pounds.

Banks scored 47 points, as did East Jackson. East Jackson had two third-place finishers and a sixth-place finisher.

Both teams trailed state champion Jefferson, Lovett, Toombs County, Henry County, Dublin, Sonoraville, Westminster, Swainsboro, Blessed Trinity, Benedictine and Buford.

Last year the Leopards finished 13th at state, and coach Kasey Hanley was hoping to break inside the top ten this year.

The already tough 8-AA region saw the addition of perennial wrestling powerhouse Jefferson this season. Even with the added challenge of Jefferson, Banks qualified five for the state tournament. Of those five, three placed. However it’s sliced the Leopards did well.

Next season, Banks will look to move inside the top ten, using this year’s success as a foundation. The grapplers say goodbye to several seniors, but maintain a strong core of talent. This year’s senior wrestlers include state placers Demetric Dempson and Tramane Mayfield. The other Mat Leopard seniors are Stephen Giles, Tyler Goodson, Wesley Angel, Simon Hurtado, Max Wright and Tyler Young.
